Federal Highway Administration Seeks Guardrail Crash Information from Victims

The search for data on a controversial highway safety device continues as the Federal Highway Administration expands their reach. The FHWA recently created an internet portal for the general public to submit information about car accidents involving highway guardrails.

This call for information shows just how intense the scrutiny around Trinity Industries and their ET-Plus guardrail has grown. In October, a federal jury found that the company had defrauded the government by failing to report changes made to the guardrail end terminal’s design. Many believe it is this change in design that has led to dangerous malfunctions.

The ET-Plus is designed to absorb the shock of car accidents by slowing oncoming vehicles. The sharp edges of the guardrail sides are supposed to peel backward and away from cars, but instead, the guardrail head has been known to seize up. This results in a piercing of the oncoming car, frequently injuring or even killing passengers inside. The guardrail in question is associated with at least eight known fatalities and many serious injuries.

The ET-Plus has been banned in dozens of states, but the fate of the guardrail lies in the federally mandated crash testing currently underway. If the tests prove the guardrails are indeed malfunctioning, hundreds of thousands of guardrails will need to be located and removed for our nation’s roads.

If you or someone you know has been involved in a car wreck, visit the FHWA website to report the details of the accident. The more information the agency has about the malfunctioning ET-Plus, the safer our roads will be in the future.
