Louisiana Joins List of States Discontinuing Use of Trinity Guardrails

Louisiana has become the latest state to discontinue use of guardrails manufactured by Trinity Industries. The guardrail known as ET-Plus has come under fire after a report by ABC Investigates showed that the end of the guardrail has malfunctioned due to a flaw in the design. Guardrails should absorb the speed from a collision and peel away as cars slam into them. Instead, the ET-Plus has been known to spear the cabin of cars and even amputate crash victims.

Initial guardrail designs were safety tested and approved by states across the country, but according to wbrz.com, the problem may lie in a product redesign that occurred in 2005. In the redesign, a piece of metal was reduced from five to four inches. Just one inch difference might mean a higher risk of injury and death for those involved in crashes. Shockingly, ABC Investigates revealed that this design change saved Trinity Industries money.

Jury Says Guardrail Company Defrauded Government

A Texas jury recently found that Trinity Industries had withheld important information about the design flaw. The case ended with a $175 million verdict, leading to Trinity Industries announcing a halt in sales until additional safety tests could be conducted.
