Vermont Takes Guardrail Off Approved List

Vermont - Stops Us of ET-Plus GuardrailFollowing an investigation conducted by ABC Investigates, guardrails across the country are being scrutinized for safety standards. Now, Vermont’s Department of Transportation has taken the guardrails in question off its approved list of materials. This means that the ET-Plus guardrail head, manufactured by Trinity Industries, will no longer be installed on Vermont highways. In addition, according to mychamplainvalley.com, the Vermont Department of Transportation will inspect each guardrail currently on the road to review performance and safety.

Highway guardrails act as safety mechanisms to lessen the impact of colliding vehicles by peeling away and slowing the crash to a stop. This particular model of guardrail has allegedly malfunctioned, piercing the vehicles and often leading to injuries and fatalities. Some victims have even lost limbs in accidents where this model of guardrail was involved.

The Trinity Industries guardrails appear on highways nation-wide. I applaud Vermont for taking the initiative to prevent more of these unsafe materials on our roads. As this investigation continues, I expect more and more states to follow in Vermont’s lead. The Federal Highway Administration is working to help test the safety of such guardrails, but until this unsafe product is off the road, there will likely to continue to be accidents worsened by the malfunction.
