New Questions Arise Regarding ET-Plus Guardrail Testing

ET-Plus guardrails, manufactured by Trinity, Inc. and installed on roadways nationwide, have recently been at the center of a scandal involving fraud committed on regulators and lethal collisions. Recently, testing has begun to determine whether fixes made to ET-Plus guardrails will enable them operate safely. However, problems already have been reported with the testing.

According to a recent WSPA.com report, a researcher at the University of Birmingham recently spoke up about what he see as problems with the way Trinity is conducting its testing. In particular, Trinity does not appear to be re-producing the conditions that appear to lead to the guardrails failure. The Birmingham researcher claims that the guardrails fail when impacted at a low-angle. It is this low-angle that is currently being omitted from the ET-Plus tests. The National Traffic and Highway Safety Association has said that there has of yet been no “verifiable data” connect the guardrail failures to low-angle impacts. Notably, the low angle impact appears to be the most common kind of crash. So far, two of the tests conducted by Trinity appear to show that the guardrails are functioning as intended.

In October, a jury verdict was obtained against ET-Plus for modifying its guardrails without informing and seeking the approval of Federal regulators.
