New Hampshire Crash Highlights Guardrail Risks

A New Hampshire man is recovering after a scary run-in with a guardrail along the F.E. Everett Turnpike. His car was traveling south when he lost control and crashed through the guardrail. The incident occurred during the morning rush hour. The road was closed for 30 minutes while the accident was cleared.

A Narrow Escape

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene to discover that witnesses had moved the driver away from the car, which had caught fire. The man was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. A second vehicle traveling north also became involved in the incident when they struck debris in the road, activating their airbag and damaging the car. The second driver was thankfully unharmed.

When Guardrails Malfunction

While it’s impossible to know the full story just from looking at photos, one has to merely glance at images of the accident scene to know how narrowly the driver escaped with his life. When guardrails function as intended, they should fold like an accordion under the weight of the oncoming vehicle. It’s possible that this guardrail, like so many others, malfunctioned instead, spearing the front of the car and piercing the interior cabin.

These kinds of wrecks have killed many. Others have survived such crashes but suffered life-threatening injuries they may never fully recover from. Some victims even saw their limbs amputated by the sharp, piercing metal of the guardrail. It’s why so many opt to take legal action against the companies who manufacture defective safety devices.
