Trinity Industries has come under fire recently after an ABC Investigates report surfaced scrutinizing the safety of the ET-Plus guardrail heads found on many of our nation’s highways. The guardrails in question are designed to split upon impact and peel away as vehicles crash through them, ultimately slowing accidents to a stop. Instead, the guardrail heads pierce right through the oncoming cars, often slicing through the cabins. Several people have lost limbs in accidents involving the malfunctioning guardrail.
The company decided last week that they would halt shipping of the ET-Plus guardrail until the necessary safety testing has been conducted. Though Trinity Industries insists they have tested the materials in the past, a jury recently found the company has made false claims to federal regulators about the guardrail end’s design.
Ultimately, Trinity’s guardrails don’t do enough to cushion the impact in accident as designed. Though the company continues to deny these claims, they will have to answer to the Federal Highway Administration by October 31 and explain the tests they will run to guarantee the safety of the guardrail system.
The repercussions of this investigation are already being felt around the country. Many states have stopped future installations of the ET-Plus model of guardrails.
